In full disclosure, Marilyn is a friend and was my life coach for several years. That said, I believe Marilyn’s book provides a great service to men. Each of the stories provide an unique glimpse into the trials, journeys and triumphs of these men. As I was reading the book, I was able to relate to many of these men. I lost my father when I was 10 years old and it took me many years to come to terms with the loss. The stories told by these men will help any man who is struggling to find himself and his masculinity.I wish someone could have handed me a book like this in my early teens. Having a book like this would have allowed me to understand that it is okay to not know what it means to be a man or masculine, to be lost in times of trial and to question my ability to rise to the occasion. It is the action of stepping out on faith that we learn what we are made of. Through doing, we find our authentic selves. Once we know our true selves, we are capable of achieving anything we set our minds to accomplish. As Jesus said in Mark 11:23 ESV, “Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou taken up and cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he saith cometh to pass; he shall have it.” It is through conversations like the ones in this book that encourage men to step out on faith and see what we are made of. Bravo Marilyn!

In Just One Afternoon Listening Into the Hearts of Men edition by Marilyn Shannon SelfHelp eBooks Reviews
How does one woman get so many men to open up and be so honest? Amazing stories here, some sad, some happy and some brutally honest. A great read for those about to become newly weds. Understanding communication is the most important aspect in a relationship. A fabulous read, but prepare to be a bit shocked!!!
The men's stories that Marilyn Shannon shares in this book are heartfelt and engaging. When I finished reading one story I couldn't wait to read the next. It was a great experience "listening into the hearts" of these men, and I think it is a great concept. I hear women's thoughts all the time, but not mens. Wow. Men are people, too. Only kidding, but it was great to have the proof. I learned about mens' hearts and souls, and it was a wonderful experience.
From our blog post "Sunday Book Start Celebrate Manifested Dreams on Dr. King's Unbirthday, Too" at Smart Enterprises of Wilmington (NC), SEWilm.
Today, during the inauguration of (Un)social Sunday (it's like an unbirthday with fewer teapots), I was delighted to receive a Facebook message from Marilyn, the founder of Women's Power Networking, which has a Wilmington branch I've recently joined, and the author of In Just One Afternoon.
I was so intrigued by the book's premise, that I decided to start reading it this afternoon, and I was really pleased to see, on Dr. King's real birthday, January 15th, how MLK's dreams manifested in the lives of some of the book's contributors, such as Mark Shannon. Mark is the author's husband, and he writes that Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy, and the Civil Rights Movement, "helped instill in me a sense of fairness and justice."
It's terrific that Shannon's husband supported her work by contributing a chapter to this book and fun that she includes personal details such as how they met. I especially love seeing a little photo of each contributor as I read his story. This book is a reflection on the feelings of men, our neighbors, and Shannon ends each chapter with ways all of us can spur growth from these stories in "Just One Afternoon."
Another reference to impressive dreams comes from Jelani Hamm, who writes, "In the gap between the edge of our dreams and the actualization of our dreams, we, the change agents, are called to many tests. Many males travelers retreat from the gap while other men will transform into the person that is needed to carry them to new lands. This willingness to transform inside the abyss requires men to be courageous." Wow, really powerful imagery.
In addition to the photos, I would love to see within the version links to these men's websites. I looked up "carney" business owner, Maxwell Ivey's blog, The Blind Blogger, whose story is one of several in the book that describes progressing despite physical challenges. He is the author of another book, too, Leading You Out of the Darkness Into the Light A Blind Man's Inspirational Guide to Success. which I'll add to our library shelf.
Great start to an uplifting new book! Happy Unbirthday, everyone. Celebrate peaceful action tomorrow (we're having a parade in Wilmington) and enjoy your day off.
This was a great read! Each and every story was intriguing and left me wanting to read more about each gentlemen lives.
Finally we are allowed into the hearts of men and what we find is beautiful. This book allows us to see the vulnerability, strength and courage of these men. Each time I finished a story, I couldn't wait to read the next. Thanks for sharing Marilyn.
This is not the kind of book that I normally read, but it is very engaging and I can relate to some of the people in the stories. I normally read business books and this was a nice change. It reminds me that family and relationships are important. What experiences you go though when you are young shape you but do not define you. If you want some emotional tugs, read this book.
This book shows there are sensitive men out there. Many stories about life's struggles and how to survive and actually change yourself. The stories are real, sensitive and worth reading. Pick up the book and choose a story. Men or woman will see ideas that work for them to look into their souls and find some peace.
