Brief Encounters with Che Guevara Stories (Audible Audio Edition) Ben Fountain Christian Baskous HarperAudio Books
This is an erudite, stimulating collection of short stories focusing on the West's business and political interests in countries such as Cuba, Haiti and Sierra Leone. The stories seem historically genuine, and the atmosphere of tragedy and fatalism inherent in all of the stories is tempered by humor. The writing is excellent, and grammatical errors in the Kindle edition are limited to syllables inappropriately separated within a word.Even the author's biography at the end is comprised of a series of compelling events. I don't often read these, but I read this one to the end.
Curiously, the Kindle edition ends with an unrelated story about two uniquely-gifted pianists.

Brief Encounters with Che Guevara Stories (Audible Audio Edition) Ben Fountain Christian Baskous HarperAudio Books Reviews
With Brief Encounters with Che Guevara, Ben Fountain leads us masterfully through moments of historic conflict with the greatest of sensitivity and perspicacity. His observations of his characters and their context is masterful in its detailed economy. His understanding of each historic context is deep and his empathy with the characters caught each in the maelstrom of their era is poignant and discerning. He finds all the humbling humor in each circumstance to convey. What a great collection of short stories. Each is a pearl And his novel Billy Lynn's Long Half time Walk is equally unforgettable !
I found the stories interesting and well-written, but I'm not sure how the last story connected to the others, and I found the penultimate story disappointing. But, the others were intriguing, and there were some glimmers of positivity amidst the despair.
I cannot think of a thing I disliked & I did try.
The writing is so imaginative and believable. Really caught me up. I would love to meet the characters - they originated and no doubt returned to Ben Fountain's mind. Thus, I would very much enjoy meeting the author. This book is well worth reading twice - first as a re-introduction to story lines, places, and to listen again to the narrator, such a fascinating man I'd be glad to know him better. My mind would be in a dream of a story and another would so seamlessly make its appearance, before I knew it was there, I was curled up on the couch being transported into another place, meeting new people, I'd love to meet again... Fountain is a ringmaster of story telling. Find out for yourselves...
The birdwatcher kidnapped by Colombian rebels, the mediocre golf pro who sells his soul in Myanmar, and the aid worker in Sierra Leone who contemplates diamond smuggling to finance her good works. Ben Fountain has created memorable stories of expats getting in dangerous situations throughout the world—often as a result of their own actions. the last story, about the piano-playing prodigy, was too long and obscure to capture my interest, but still masterfully written.
Ben Fountain is a talented wordsmith and brilliant storyteller. He once wrote that Americans need to go abroad to grow up - these tales show why. His stories from Haiti to Fort Bragg to Sierra Leone to Vienna (😃) are rich with detail and engaging plot lines. The tales are as lovely as they are disturbing and do not end at the close of the book but continue on in truth and consequence throughout the world today. Read the story about Wall Street and the FARC and google the sordid reality - specifically The Observer's Dec 12, 2009 article entitled "Drug money saved banks in global crisis, claims UN advisor." These stories will give ample fodder for engaging discussions for book clubs and student groups. The cost of the book will give you pleasurable hours of reading and the satisfaction of money well spent. Kudos Mr. Fountain for a wonderful read.
I was very pleasantly surprised by the stories in this book. Fountain strikes me as a writer in the spirit of O. Henry, with an affectionate eye to his characters, even though they have their own foibles, and love of an ironic twist. The subject matter of several stories is serious, yet he projects a quality of humor, and even security, so that one never feels that the thread is overly intense.
Fountain's familarity with locales and cultures most of us in the North find exotic add another layer of richness to his writing and the characters he protrays, bringing back to me memories of my own forays into the developing world.
I tried to think of which of the eight stories is my favorite, but each had its own distinct flavor. He is definitely not a formulaic writer. It was worth the read for me, enough so that I am just now starting one of his novels.
I didn’t expect to like this short story collection and put off reading it for months. Then I read the first story “Near-Extinct Birds of the Central Cordillera” and I was so stunned that I couldn’t move when I finished. I simply sat there, still engulfed in the story. I felt similar after reading “The Good Ones Are Already Taken.” These aren’t quick reads, loaded as they are with metaphor and meaning, but their very meatiness makes them worthy. P.S. Don’t forget to read the title story, “Brief Encounters With Che Guevara,” which is odd and funny and almost perfect.
